The Singapura is truly the Cinderella of cat breeds with its origins as a street cat in Singapore but today found mixing in the best of company on the show benches.
With a deceptively delicate appearance and an angelic face one would never guess that the Singapura was known as a drain cat in Singapore.
Although developed as a purebred show cat in USA during the 1970s, in 1991 the Singapura was declared to be a living national monument by the Singapore Government. The Singapore Tourist and Promotion Board have since placed statues of the Singapura down its riverbanks and Singapore promotional material now regularly features these beautiful creatures.
A beguiling cat with large eyes and ears, a Singapura does not miss much going on in its household. Lively, curious and intelligent with a playful nature well into adulthood, it is also very sensitive to the moods of its owners. The Singapura is a very affectionate cat with a strong need for human company and generally capacity to get along well with children and other pets.
The Singapura is the smallest of cat breeds but the body is muscular and solid. It comes in just the one colour -sepia agouti, which is a dark brown ticking on a warm-ivory base. Ideally, each hair must have at least two bands of dark ticking separated by light bands.
The muzzle, chin, chest and underbelly are cream. The tail has a dark tip. The soft brown lines around the eyes and nose contribute to a wildcat-like appearance. The Singapura is easy to groom, having a fine, short coat.
